Project Brief

RMG successfully project managed the Girgarre-Rushworth Road Bridge upgrade, commissioned by the Department of Transport and Planning. The project aimed to replace the existing bridge over the Waranga Basin Western Channel, addressing structural concerns and enhancing transportation capabilities.

With a budget of $4.9 million, the project commenced in February 2023 and was completed within the contract period, reopening to motorists in October 2023.

Project Details

Situated north of Rushworth in the Loddon Mallee region, the bridge was originally constructed in 1977 with a four-span design. Due to subsidence issues, the aging bridge imposed a 40km/h speed limit and a 42.5-tonne load restriction, prompting the need for replacement.

The construction period included a full road closure and detour, ensuring safety during the upgrade.

The bridge elevation saw an increase of up to 2.5m, with 13,500m3 of Type A fill imported to the site. Private driveway works were also integrated into the project scope.

Rigorous measures were implemented to prevent debris from entering the waterway, complemented by regular water testing to uphold environmental standards.

Project Outcomes

The completion of the Girgarre-Rushworth Rd Bridge marks a significant achievement, offering a vital connection over the Waranga Basin Western Channel.

The new bridge eliminates previous speed and load restrictions, allowing heavy vehicles over 42.5 tonnes to access Girgarre-Rushworth Rd. This development is expected to positively impact the local community, particularly the agriculture and horticulture industries.

The successful completion of the project underscores RMG’s commitment to delivering critical infrastructure projects efficiently and meeting the transportation needs of the community.
