RMG worked alongside the Djaara People and Y2 Architecture to deliver structural and civil engineering services for the DJAARA Corporate Centre, Larnangurrak. This project celebrates and strengthens cultural heritage while providing a modern, functional space.
Larnangurrak is a place for People to practice, strengthen and share culture. The centre features yarning and sand circles for ceremony, rammed-earth walls and extensive use of locally sourced materials like stones and timber. Landscaping reintroduces culturally important plants, which are watered by storm water. The centre also provides office space for up to 100 staff.
Drawing inspiration from the Djaara People’s ideology of “Bunjil,” the innovative design integrates a mass timber roof pavilion supported on steel Y columns. This creates large open floor spaces and minimizes visible vertical structure, achieving a floating aesthetic. Exposed rammed earth walls further connect the design to the cultural heritage of the site and the broader Dja Dja Wurrung country.
Located on the former Golden Square Secondary College site, the extensive civil site works included the construction of:
- A new office
- Community and conference centre
- Gallery
- Auditoria space
- User and visitor parking
