Phee Broadway Theatre

Mount Alexander Shire Council, Phee Broadway Theatre

The Phee Broadway Theatre is a heritage building that is an integral part of the Castlemaine arts culture.

This facility is shared by production companies, local schools, community groups and the Victorian State Festival and delivers a range of theatre productions for the Castlemaine community. Due to the age of the Phee Broadway Theatre, there were a number of inconsistencies between the building makeup and current building regulations. Without addressing these inconsistencies – the Phee Broadway Theatre would need to close indefinitely. Closure of this valued facility caused large concerns in the community. The Castlemaine State Festival was scheduled to utilise the facility, this is Victoria’s premier regional arts festival and provides a large economic stimulus to the region.

The Phee Broadway Project included:

  • Review of current building asset
  • Structural Engineering Assessment
  • Theatrical Safety Audit
  • Structural Design of theatre roof strengthening elements with a heritage building
  • Implementation of accredited theatre components
  • Construction of roof strengthening and update of building to meet current Essential Safety components
  • Replacement of Asbestos cladding
  • Preparation of theatre technical specifications
  • Preparation and implementation of Theatre Safe Work Method Statements

Regional Management Group’s expertise in delivering outcomes during tight time frames allowed this theatre to reopen within six months of taking on the Project Management Role. This allowed works to occur beside a library unimpeded and open in time for the important State Festival.

The Mount Alexander Shire Council was able to utilise Regional Management Group’s expertise in:

  • Project Management
  • Construction Management
  • Risk Management
  • Community and Stakeholder Engagement

“Regional Management Group was able to quickly identify the option available to reopen the Phee Broadway Theatre and worked with Council in gaining budget approval. From this point Regional Management Group was able to actively engage with all relevant stakeholders to ensure appropriate input into the design and construction of the remediation works. During the delivery of works Regional Management Group helped reduce risk during the delivery of this major project and was able to have the Phee Broadway Theatre open for the State Festival. Due to Regional Management Group’s engagement this project was delivered on time, under budget and to scope.”
